The Thirtieth
My
dear, I don’t want you to make a fuss,
But
I think folks are worried about us.
Indeed,
I think it’s greatly to be feared
They
think we’re weird:
For
here comes anniversary #30,
And
we’re still flirty.
They
look on us with wonder and surprise,
When
we make goo-goo eyes.
They
say, “How can their love remain so strong
When
they have been together for so long?
Surely
something’s wrong.”
They
know we must be mixed up in our heads,
Because
we carry on like newlyweds.
(What!
Me and you?
Ha!
If only they knew!)
All
I can say is, when I compare you to before,
Right
now I like you even more.
So
now, when on June 30th it’s our 30th,
Let’s
make it the flirtieth.

LAY SCHOOL NEWS
The
Fall 2013 Semester is set to begin on September 3 and will continue every
Tuesday until November 19.
Classes
will be held at Bethany, Ishpeming (715 Mather Ave.) with Pastor Warren Geier
as the site coordinator.
Five
classes will be offered in the Fall 2013 semester (please note the dates and times for each
class as they do vary)
Pentateuch September 3-October 1 (3-5:30pm)
(5 sessions)
A
study of the first five books of the Old Testament. The stories of the
Pentateuch will be examined, not merely as history, but as theological
statements, and the legal material will be considered in light of our
contemporary culture. (Pastor Warren Geier;
Bethany, Ishpeming)
Systematics
Second Article September 3 –October 1 (6-8:10pm) (5
sessions)
A
study of the second article of the Nicene Creed concerning who Jesus is
and what he represents, and what is it about the human condition that
necessitates Christ and the cross? What are the historical foundations,
especially regarding the nature of Christ?
(Pastor Peter Anderson;
Messiah, Marquette)
Spiritual Development October 8-October 29 (3:30-5:45)
(4 sessions)
An
exploration of spiritual practices, especially prayer, and how as we develop
them they develop us in our faith journey. There will be an emphasis on
learning and doing spiritual practices, not just learning about them. (Terry
Cathcart, retired Covenant church pastor and spiritual director)
Overview of Ministry in the Congregation October 8-Nov 12 (6-8:30pm)
(6 sessions)
This
class will feature guest speakers representing some wider ministries of the
church such as Lutheran Social Services, Lutheran World Hunger, Earthkeepers,
the Lutheran Office of Public Policy and Reconciling Works. Many of our churches work with these
ministries and this will represent an opportunity to hear firsthand about what
they do and how they operate as well as learning how to be more involved as
individuals and as congregations.
Ethics
November 5-November 19
(3:30-5:30) (3 sessions)
A
brief course on ethical behavior in light of the cross and God’s call to righteousness.
(Pastor Jim Duehring; Prince of
Peace, Harvey)
A
reminder that there is no tuition; the only cost is for books and instructors
do the best they can to keep that within reason. Many of the books can be
bought used which can also provide significant savings. Students have been responsible for purchasing
their own books.
As is always the case, we need
new students! It should be emphasized
though that one does not have to sign up for all the classes, one does not have
to complete all the classes in a certain period of time, one does not even have
to complete all the classes ever. You
can take as much or as little as works for your schedule and your
interests. There is reading to do
outside of class and some teachers suggest an occasional short paper but the
program is designed to be flexible.
Also, please note that Lay School is not designed to produce Licensed
Lay Ministers. While that is a
possibility and some graduates have gone in that direction, most students are
just interested in growing in faith and becoming more active in their own
congregations.
To register for classes, or for more detailed
information or if you have specific questions, contact your pastor or Pastor
Geier (486-4351;pastor@bethanyishpeming.org).
It would be great to have some
new students give Lay School a try, so consider this a personal
invitation! If you’re not sure, try a
course and see how it goes. You will
grow in faith and you and your church will benefit from your involvement!
EIGHT QUALITY CHARACTERISTICS OF GROWING CHURCHES
After research
of Christian Schwarz et al (notes by DN)
NOTE: In every case listed below, “the interesting
thing is not the noun but the adjective.”
Every congregation has leadership, ministry, spirituality, etc. The important question is, “What kind of leadership etc. is it?”
Empowering
Leadership
Congregations do best when
leaders help others find, develop and use their gifts; even to pursue their
dreams for service of others. This is
the opposite of the “pastor-guru” model, the “control-freak church council”
model, or the “that’s what we pay the pastor for” model.
Gift-oriented
Ministry
Congregations do best when people
are doing the things they are really gifted to do. This means more than just being able to do something. It usually means doing things we are
passionate about, things we don’t get weary or tired doing, things we are
called by God to do.
Passionate
Spirituality
Congregations do best when “faith
is lived out with commitment, fire and enthusiasm.” The central issue is not the method or even
the amount of prayer or giving. It is
the p
assion
(or lack of it).
Functional
Structures
Congregations do best when ways
of doing things are chosen because they work,
not for other reasons (such as “we’ve always done it like that” or “we’re
‘supposed to’ have a committee for this”).
Inspiring
Worship Service
Congregations do best when people
experience worship as meaningful, something they want to do – Schwarz even uses
the word “fun”.
Holistic Small
Groups
Congregations do best when the
members have ways of ministering to each
other (not just receiving ministry from the pastor) with regard to every
aspect of life and their relationship to God.
Need-oriented
Evangelism
Congregations do best when they serve the communities around them, with
attitudes and actions that say, “How can we help you?” – not so much, “How can
we get you to join us?”
Loving
Relationships
Congregations do best when the
members like being together. For example, it is a good sign if people
laugh a lot, hang out together outside of church activities, and feel they can
be open about personal problems.
Generally,
the area most likely to limit congregational growth is whatever is weakest.
Therefore that is the most strategic area to work on. But all of these areas are important. If a congregation becomes very strong in all
these areas, it has an almost 100% chance of growing!

SYNOD ASSEMBLY
Our
delegates Wayne Pleaugh and Jake Holappa took $112.50 with them to the World
Hunger Offering. They Synod collected a
grand total of $17,823.94!
SYNOD ASSEMBLY
REPORT, 2013
The Northern Great Lakes Synod
(NGLS) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) held its 26th
Annual Synod Assembly May 16-18, 2013 at Northern Michigan University and
Messiah Lutheran Church in Marquette. What follows is a short report. The Synod office’s summary also is or soon
will be online at www.nglsynod.org.
About 300 church leaders attended
the event under the theme “Always Being Made New”. Thanks to Jake Holappa and Wayne Pleaugh for
joining me (DN) as voting members this year. (As female lay voting members
outnumbered males 99 to 57, Jake and Wayne helped to keep that number
balanced.)
Once again, the worship was
well-planned, and the people participated enthusiastically. Thanks to Carol
Pleaugh and Shirley Norquist, who joined the choir for opening worship. The
hymns and liturgy drew from some of our oldest sources (lots of plainchant on
Thursday evening) and the newest (we were blessed by the presence of Lutheran
rock-oriented composer and musician, Jay Beech). I had the privilege of being
Jay’s “shadow” (making sure he got where he needed to go) and playing piano
with him in the Saturday morning worship band.
We were thrilled to have as
guests the Agape Choir from Azania Front Lutheran Church in Dar es Salaam,
Tanzania, who shared their excellent music with us several times.
There was very little business
conducted, in the sense of resolutions being adopted. (For the record, I’m not
complaining.) We approved the synod budget and compensation guidelines, elected
some members for the Synod Discipline Committee; and passed a resolution,
“Sufficient, Sustainable Livelihood for All”, which encourages awareness of the
problems of the working poor.
The keynote address came from the
Rev. Stan Olson of Wartburg Seminary. Mr. Carlos Peña gave an excellent address
representing the ELCA Churchwide office. (That’s Peña the ELCA Vice President,
not the baseball player. But he was presented
with a Detroit Tigers baseball jersey, just in case he gets traded. Ever loyal,
the bishop added a Milwaukee Brewers shirt to the mix.) I had a couple of
opportunities for conversation with Mr. Peña, and was impressed with him. He is
a businessman from Texas who volunteers his time as Vice President. He also has
worked as a musician, and still takes occasional gigs as a trombonist. We also
heard excellent sermons from Bishop Skrenes and our synod secretary, Pastor
Doug Johnson; and Assistant to the Bishop, Rev. Katherine Finegan, did good
work as usual leading the Bible study.
Offering totals were $17,824 for
the World Hunger offering; and $5,278 for the general offering.

The Wife’s
Birthday
Douglas Norquist, 2013
I’ve
been given advice, both wise and sage,
That
I never should tell a woman’s age.
And
so, when my own wife’s birthday comes
It’s
better for me if I play dumb.
If
you want to know how old she is,
I’m
sure I could tell you if I would.
I
won’t tell a soul. But I will say this –
A
lot of 62-year-old women don’t look that good!
On Turning 51
Douglas Norquist, 2013
I
think, when all is said and done,
It’s
easier to turn 51
Than
it was to reach the Big Five-O;
And
I will tell you why that’s so.
A
birthday doesn’t seem as strange
If
that first digit doesn’t change.
For
instance, going from 47 to 48 –
That
was great.
But
turning from 49 to 50 wasn’t so easy:
Seeing
that 4 turn to a 5 can make a guy queasy.
Now,
changing from 50 to 51,
While
not exactly what I’d call fun,
At
least means the change from 4 to 5 is already over with and done.
In
eight years, God willing, I’ll turn 59:
That’s
still fifty-something, so it’ll be fine.
But
a year after that, I’ll be in a fix,
As
that pesky first digit will become a 6.

SYNOD ASSEMBLY
REPORT, 2011
This was an uneventful Synod
Assembly – some assembly veterans, weary of the way it can sometimes get, were
heard to utter the words “blessedly dull”.
For me, the best and most memorable part of the assembly was the
worship. This is gratifying, as I think
it is the most important thing we do at these assemblies (we are after all the
church).
There was virtually no business
conducted, in the sense of resolutions being adopted. We did necessary things like adopting a
budget, plus electing representatives to the 2013 Churchwide Assembly (in
Pittsburgh) and members for the Synod Consultation Committee. As for the budget, we seem to have turned a
corner. After several years of
significant drops in the budgets, it looks like now we will at least hold
steady.
Pastor Katherine Finegan was
installed as Assistant to the Bishop, which pleases many of us greatly; and
Pastor Tracy Polzin was installed as Camp Director for Fortune Lake Camp.
Dan Lehman, editor of The Lutheran spoke to us in that
capacity and as representative from the Churchwide offices.
This year about 200 people went
to “sampler classes” from our Synod Lay School for Mission, an opportunity to
get a feel for the interesting things that happen there. I believe there are five (hoping for six)
sites for this interesting school, the nearest to us being at Bethany,
Ishpeming. Classes are taught mostly by
area clergy. I definitely recommend
these classes to anyone who might be curious.
You can take as many or as few classes as you choose, and if you choose
to attend the whole program you can do it at whatever pace you choose. The Lay School resumes this fall.
Offering totals were a record
$19,237 for the World Hunger Quarters offering ($152 of which was from our
congregation); $2,485 for the Tanzania Dental Fund; and $2,435 for the Lay
School for Mission.
